Four-Slide Forming Is Frequently Necessary for Creating Complex Wire Form Geometries
Two-slide, multi-slide and four-slide forming refers to a wire extrusion process do draw wire or thin hollow wire (“wire tubing” fabrication) through four-slide/multi-slide forming machinery. There are many reasons to utilize this type of machinery for precision wire forms fabrication, particularly when using precious, semi-precious or rare metals since the extrusion process does not “waste” any of the blank wire—it is either thinned-and-drawn, or excess metal from the extrusion process is recyclable, depending on the techniques and machinery used for the process. One of the most common references to this process is fabrication utilizing “wire swaging” techniques. Multi-slide and four-slide forming machinery are used in the fabrication of a wide variety of complex wire forms, which frequently have multiple bends or complex geometries.
The wire extrusion process using multi-slide and/or four-slide forming techniques are used to alter the diameter of your blank wire for wire forms. “Drawing wire” is usually the first step in a two-step process. The second step usually involves drawing the wire through at least two dies, frequently more. The wire is hammered into a smaller diameter and then the same machinery or different machinery is used to create the secondary fabrication process of bending wire or creating complex geometries. Generally, this involves creating a bend or an angled bend to the left or right relative to the main body of wire. Depending on the specifics of the fabrication process, your wire forms may be drawn through four-slide, multi-slide machinery, draw benches ore even spindles. The swaging part of the process frequently involves using multiple dies—hollow wires or tubing are drawn through mandrels—tagging machinery, additional spindles and/or rollers, annular rollers and even wedges.
The ends of the wire or wire form in question can be hammered, drawn, points created, chamfered, flared or used for joins with other applicable ends or wire parts depending on specific production requirements. The total number of steps involved in four-slide forming really depend on the complexity of the wire form geometry in question.
Wire Diameter Production Capacity
Western Wire Products Co. fabricates wire forms with a wide range of wire diameters. For four-slide forming we can usually accommodate blank wire diameters of 0.028” to 0.562” with metric sizing ranging from 0.75 mm to 14 mm. Our highly precise, CNC-machining generally accommodates blank wire diameters of 0.016” to 0.625” with metric sizing ranging from 0.4 mm to 16 mm. We can also accommodate strip steel wire fabrications up to 16 gauge. Of course, with over 100 pieces of production machinery and equipment at our facilities in Fenton, we can accommodate a wide range of simple to very complex wire form geometries—let us know your wire forms specifications.
