General Wire Forms Product Categories and Custom Manufacturing

Our main product categories include standardized wire forms including: mechanical fastenerswire formswire handles and wire hangers.  We also do a lot of specialty and custom manufacturing.  A few examples of custom wire forms categories include:  custom-made springs (meeting precision compression, extension and torsion specification), custom hooks (and custom steel hooks), sanitary wire forms (for agriculture, food processing and distribution equipment, medical equipment, IV hooks, and other wire forms requiring passivation of stainless steels), and industrial wire products.

What Is Blank Wire Swaging?

Wire swaging is a general manufacturing process utilizing precision two-slide, four-slide/multi-slide machinery that draws blank wire through the equipment.  This is a wire extrusion process, frequently used to alter or reduce the diameter of blank wire to meet fabrication specifications.  This first step is similar to “drawing wire” (a.k.a. “tube swaging”), and this is usually the first step in a two-part process.  The second part of the primary fabrication is to draw your extruded, blank wire through two or more dies.  The blank wire is forced through dies and round wire is hammered into a smaller diameter.  This process may involve one or more pieces of machinery, since there are many types of equipment engineered for secondary wire swaging or “rotary swaging.”

Depending upon your fabrication requirements, multi-slide, four-slide, draw benches, spindle machinery or other equipment may be used to finalize your primary wire fabrications.  For wire forms, wire swaging frequently involves drawing wire through multiple dies, mandrels for hollow wire forms, tagging machinery, spindles, multiple rollers, annular rollers and wedges—of course, there are additional procedures for creating points on the end of wire, for chamfering or creating flares on the wire for adding differing ends onto a wire form.  The steps in the process really do depend entirely upon the desired fabrication end-result.

Additionally, wire swaging is ideal for use with expensive, rare and/or precious metals, since the wire swaging process generally does not result in the loss of the blank wire metal.  The diameter of a wire is reduced in size–it is extruded and lengthened, which results in minimal or no loss of the metal in question.  Of course, wire swaging may just be one part of the process of your wire form fabrication specifications.

Western Wire Products Company manufactures a wide range of complex wire forms that meet a wide range fabrication requirements for the aerospace/aviation, automotive, electronics, general manufacturing, heavy industrial sectors, or other types of business.  We also meet military standards including United States Navy specifications (AN, MS, NAS and NASM).

Our General Wire Forms Production Capacity

Once your company approves a design and prototype work, we can move on to wire forms production.  Currently, Western Wire Products Company has over 100 pieces of production machinery including a variety of precision fabrication equipment and CNC machinery.  Our prototype work also involves your specific materials selection(s), primary fabrication service(s), secondary operation(s), coating(s), treatment(s) and finishing options.

Our general wire forms production capacity includes:

  • Blank wire bending and forming
  • Blank wire threading services
  • Lower-volume, CNC/precision blank wire fabrication services that accommodate wire diameters from 0.016” to 0.625” (metric sizing:  0.4 mm to 16 mm)
  • Higher-volume, precision wire forms fabrication using four-slide and/or multi-slide forming machinery that accommodate wire diameters from 0.028” to 0.562” (metric sizing:  0.75 mm to 14 mm)
  • Strip steel wire forming (up to 16 gauge)
  • Base materials selections: aluminum, brass, copper, hanger iron, or cold-rolled, galvanized, mild and stainless steels—we can use other alloys and metals per client specifications
  • Primary fabrication services including: blank wire forming, single-to-complex wire bending, four-slide forming, multi-slide forming, wire swaging, strip wire forming and wire threading services
  • Secondary operations:  assembly, Austempering, bending, chamfering, coining, deburring, drilling, in-process staking, machining, notching, punching, staking, stamping, tapping, threading and secondary threading, undercutting, vibratory deburring, welding services, and additional services
